Merced MLRP Planning Process
The Merced Multibenefit Agricultural Land Repurposing Plan (MALRP)
The Merced MLRP partners are working to develop a Multibenefit Agricultural Land Repurposing Plan (MALRP). This plan will provide tools for identifying land repurposing strategies and projects that reduce reliance on groundwater while simultaneously supporting a viable agricultural economy and investing in improved community and environmental health outcomes. The Merced MALRP is not only aligned with broad MLRP goals and desired outcomes, but also with other regional restoration and land repurposing efforts in the Subbasin. The program aims to be consistent with MSGSA’s Groundwater Sustainability Plan (GSP).
Unique to Merced is an opportunity for land repurposing in a specific part of the subbasin that has been identified as an Area of Conservation Emphasis (ACE): a wildlife habitat corridor between the Sierra Nevada Mountains and the Merced Wildlife Refuge. Creating a corridor here will provide wildlife habitat and connectivity while simultaneously reducing groundwater use, and providing a healthier environment for current and future generations. The Merced MLRP will identify strategies for land acquisition and conduct planning activities within the corridor area, helping to secure these long-term benefits for the community.
